Accelerated Nursing Clinicals through St. Vincent

Accelerated nursing students from Marian University work under the supervision of St. Vincent staff to treat patientsClinical rotations are a critical learning component in every nursing program. Our ABSN program, however, affords you unprecedented clinical experiences thanks to our close-knit partnership with St. Vincent, one of the top hospitals in Indiana.

Over the span of 16 months, you will complete hours of clinical practice within the St. Vincent health care network, learning from topnotch nurses and health care team members in holistic patient care. Under the supervision of a highly experienced preceptor, you will work with patients in specialty areas that include:

  • Adult Health
  • Obstetrics and Pediatrics
  • Acute and Long-term Care
  • Mental and Behavioral Health

Your first clinical, which focuses on health assessment, begins the first week of the first week of the first semester. Other clinicals you can expect to participate in throughout the program are care of the adult client, leadership, and immersion.

I’ve enjoyed every rotation at St. Vincent. The nurses and staff take the time to mentor you and allow you to gain additional experience.

Welcome to the Real World

While the length and location of your clinical rotations within St. Vincent will vary, these real-world experiences build on your lab practice by giving you a deeper understanding of the nursing profession.

St. Vincent, like Marian University, is a Catholic-based entity that believes in holistic care, which treats the mind, body, and spirit of a patient. So, as you perform your clinical rotations, you will experience the true spirit of caring as nurses teach you how to:

  • Exhibit genuine caring behavior,
  • Engage in appropriate communication,
  • Perform safe therapeutic interventions,
  • Employ ethical perspectives.

You will also get to experience the day-to-day intricacies involved in complex health care environments, from following the appropriate protocol when handling sensitive patient information to learning how to be a team player in a complex, multi-faceted environment.

The St. Vincent staff is friendly and works hard to provide maximum learning opportunities.

Developing Transformational Leaders

One of our goals at Marian University is to develop transformational leaders in all fields of study. Our leadership and management course that takes place during the fourth semester of the ABSN program gives you the chance to job shadow a leader(s) within St. Vincent. This unique opportunity will give you a different perspective on nursing that goes beyond the bedside.

The leadership class has helped me understand what goes on behind-the-scenes at a hospital. I have met the chief nursing officer at St. Vincent, gone to meetings with directors, and listened in on nursing and PCAT interviews.
